Napoleon Dynamite (John Heder) died in a car wreck.

John Heder, lead role in Napoleon Dynamite, died of head injuries after undergoing a highway car accident two days ago. He was riding in the passenger seat on his way to Salem, Oregon with his friend Mike McHill when the driver supposedly saw a deer run in front of the car. Mike overcorrected and drove off a steep ten foot embankment after rolling three or four times. John was leaving from the wrap party for the film Moving McAllister, a comedy starring Mila Kunis. Heder was said to have been heading to his home town to take a break after the movie was filmed. Sadly, for this Mormon, his plans were cut short when Bambi streaked in front of their car. The '01 Pontiac Sunfire was laying upside down in a ditch when the EMTs arrived on the scene. There were open alcoholic beverages found in the back seat but nobody knows which of the two boys were intoxicated. Mike, the driver, was life-flighted to Boise Hospital for treatment of multiple fractures and possible brain injury. There are possible legal allegations being to be put on McHill, especially if he is found to have alcohol in his blood. Not only is he in a lot of trouble when he comes out, but everyone hates him for being responsible for killing Napoleon Dynamite, the world's newest hero. The tragedy hasn't hit the media yet because Heder's parents wish to keep it undisclosed for as long as possible. Margret, his mother, states, "...at least until after the funeral because we don't want a thousand strange Dynamite-crazed fans crying over our shoulders." It really is a shame how Jon Heder finally hits the American dream and strikes it rich, only to die of a stupid death a few months later. Maybe Napoleon should have stuck to a Sledgehammer bicycle. Oh well.
Napoleon Dynamite is so popular that it has acquired cult status!

Napoleon Dynamite

Who would have thought a no-cussing, no-kissing Mormon teen comedy would become so popular? A love-it-or-hate-it movie, "Napoleon Dynamite"'s greatest strength is its seemingly limitless bank of quotable quotes, truly perfect for almost any situation. Even if you haven't seen this film yet, you've probably heard such memorable exchanges as Napoleon's response to "How was school?": "Worst day of my life, what do you think?" Pedro's election platform: "Vote for me and all of your wildest dreams will come true." And, perhaps the greatest pickup line of all time: "I see you're drinking 1%. Is that 'cause you think you're fat? 'Cause you're not. You could be drinking whole if you wanted to."
Texas teen is a dynamite look-alike for 'Napoleon'

By Dave Ferman
Knight Ridder Newspapers

March 21, 2005

FORT WORTH, Texas -- In the film "Napoleon Dynamite," the goofy title character is obsessed with sweet skills like knowing his way around a pair of nunchucks because, he says, that's what girls want in a boyfriend.

Bryan Demke's sweet skill is being Napoleon Dynamite -- or pretty darned close.

In less than two months, the 15-year-old has gone from an anonymous high school freshman in Haltom City, Texas, to posing for photos and signing autographs at nearby malls thanks to his uncanny resemblance to actor Jon Heder, who plays Napoleon in the popular comedy.

"It makes me happy to do this, and I think it makes other people happy," Demke said. "Some people said it makes their day."

Demke did Napoleon's goofy dance at Haltom High's annual lip-sync contest recently, and "the kids were screaming," said Associate Principal Adele Kennedy.

"I thought it was real good -- he was right on," she added.

In the film, Napoleon is a lovelorn, majestically nerdy tetherball player living in a small Idaho town.

He befriends Pedro (played by Efren Ramirez), who runs for student body president and wins, in part because of Napoleon's beyond-weird dancing.

Demke first saw the film shortly after it hit theaters last spring.

A second viewing convinced him that it was "the funniest thing in the world. There's something for everyone to relate to."

But it wasn't until after students came back from the 2004-05 Christmas break that his resemblance to Heder began attracting attention.

"People wouldn't stop bothering me about it," he said. "I was having fun with it, and I liked getting attention from other people instead of being ignored."

With the school's annual lip-sync contest approaching, he bought a copy of the DVD and began practicing Napoleon's moves for hours at a time.

Meanwhile, the Demke family had to move into a local hotel in mid-February as water damage to their home was being repaired.

Bryan Demke debuted his Napoleon imitation in the hotel lobby to a college volleyball team.

"They enjoyed it," he said. "It was a good reaction."

His mother, Marilyn Demke, says her son is "having the time of his life."

"His confidence has gone from zero to hero, as the saying goes. It's really neat. It just tickles a mother's heart."

Demke and his brothers have gone to local malls three weekends in a row.

"I think my brothers take me to the mall so they can get girls' phone numbers," he says of Grant, 18, and Jake, 19. "That's one of the reasons. We go to have a good time."

'Napoleon' actor makes dynamite appearance

By Jeff Commings
Tribune Reporter
March 24, 2005

If there were an applause meter at President Bush's talk this week, it would not have matched the level of cheering and mayhem that greeted Jon Heder at the University of New Mexico Student Union Building's ballroom.

The president might have the backing of half the country, but unlike the character played by Heder in "Napoleon Dynamite," Bush doesn't have hordes of screaming college students wanting to be him, act like him or talk like him.

Entering the ballroom during a look-alike contest Wednesday night, Heder was able to stand onstage as a contestant for about five seconds of obscurity before the crowd started whispering "That's Jon Heder!" They went berserk as he took a seat on the stage.

"Oh my God!" shrieked Ruthie Martinez, 16, as she took in Heder's long hair, lanky appearance and checkered shoes. "I thought he was kind of hot in the movie, but he's soooo much hotter in person!"

If you've seen the cult film "Napoleon Dynamite," then you're probably as much of a Heder devotee as Martinez. Phrases such as "My lips hurt real bad" and "The worst day of my life, what do you think?" are part of your daily lexicon. And you're often seen wearing a "Vote for Pedro" shirt, swearing loyalty to the Mexican exchange student running for class president in the film.

Heder plays the title character in the 2004 movie, an Idaho teen who deals with a steak-loving uncle, a clueless brother and classmates who push him into lockers. Heder's been visiting universities across the country to greet his fans and answer any questions they have about him or the movie.

For most of the hour he was onstage, many of the fans were astounded that Heder looked so different in real life, yet possessed the husky baritone his alter ego uses in the film.

"The voice makes him sexy," said Melissa Grant, who drove from Santa Fe to attend the event. Unfortunately, many of the female fans hoping to woo Heder were shot down: He announced he was happily married, which was met by dejected sighs and whispers of disbelief.

But one person whose enthusiasm was unabated by Heder's marital status was Paul Twitchell, the winner of the look-alike contest by virtue of showing up dressed in a polyester suit similar to that worn by Napoleon, as well as the famous permed, frizzy hair. By winning the contest, Twitchell, 18, got a chance to speak with Heder privately after the event.

"I'm a Mormon and (Heder's) a Mormon," said Twitchell, a UNM freshman, moments before meeting Heder backstage. "I think we'll talk a lot about the church and their mission and all that stuff. I think it's going to be great to hang out with him for a bit."
